Cloud Data Zine: A Blueprint for Communicating Geospatial Simply and Creatively
Every once in a while, there’s a project that truly amazes you and helps you unlock your creativity and think in an entirely new way. The Cloud Data Zine created by Kiri Carini at Development Seed is definitely one of those projects!
For as long as I have known Kiri, I’ve always thought she has the coolest job title in the industry—Geospatial Communicator. And boy, has she earned that title with this project. When people talk about making geospatial concepts simple and engaging, this is going to be a blueprint for how to do it right.
So, what’s it all about?
Making Cloud-Native Geospatial Data Fun and Accessible
Geospatial is evolving—fast. The days of clunky file downloads, rigid formats, and complicated GIS setups are fading. Instead, cloud-native approaches are making spatial data more accessible, more interoperable, and ready for real-time use.
But let’s be honest: cloud-native geospatial can feel overwhelming at first. Terms like COGs, COPC and STAC can make even experienced GIS folks look like there are not in sync with the cloud world (pun intended).
That’s exactly where the Cloud Data Zine comes in. Instead of a dry technical whitepaper, it’s a beautifully illustrated, fun, and easy-to-understand guide that makes cloud-native geospatial workflows approachable for everyone.
A Game-Changer for Geospatial Communication
Development Seed has always been a champion of open geospatial technology and making complex topics more accessible. With the Cloud Data Zine, they’ve done something truly special:
- They’ve set a new standard for communicating geospatial concepts simply and beautifully.
- They’ve created a resource that educators, developers, and decision-makers can all learn from.
- They’ve proven that geospatial storytelling can be just as fun as it is informative.
I can already see this being used as a must-have resource for anyone getting into cloud-native geospatial.
